CDL Certification Course at the Vo-Tech
The CDL A offering is a three (3) week one hundred sixty (160) hour comprehensive training program culminating in the awarding of a Commercial Drivers License by the state of Pennsylvania. Week One is classroom based. Monday, Tuesday and generally a portion of Wednesday is dedicated to the Pennsylvania written exam. The balance of the week is focused on the technical aspect of the career such as, but not limited to; mapping, trip planning, and log books. Week Two consists of range and road training. The range portion will have the student instructed in slow speed maneuvers. (Straight line backing, alley dock parking, parallel parking, coupling and uncoupling and air brakes.) The road training will consist of highway, city and rural roadways and may extend beyond the county limits based on geography and restrictions. Week Three will duplicate Week Two Monday through Wednesday. Thursday and Friday are used for the Pennsylvania Commercial Drivers License exam and review. All students are required to participate in an exit interview upon the successful completion of the state exam. This course begins February 7, 2011 and runs from Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. until February 25, 2011. The cost for the course is $4995 per student and the course will be held at the Seneca Highlands Vo-Tech School in Port Allegany.
Vehicle Inspection (12 hours)
This is a Pennsylvania State approved motor vehicle inspection course for passenger cars and light trucks, motorcycles, and medium/heavy trucks and busses. This program includes classroom and hands-on instruction. Participants must provide a valid driver’s license and Social Security card to register for this program. You must register in person at the Vo-Tech on February 8 between 6 and 7 p.m. Maximum enrollment is 25 students. This course begins February 15 and runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. until February 24, 2011. The cost for the course is $175 per person plus $40 for each additional certification exam. The hands-on test will be March 5th. The course will be held at the Seneca Highlands Vo-Tech School in Port Allegany.
SafeLand Certification (10 hours)
This one-day program meets API RP 75 & API RP T-1 requirements and provides a basic understanding at an awareness level of certain general safety information that an employee should know before entering a company facility and while performing their assigned work duties. Over 25 of the leading oil and gas operators accept this orientation as it meets their requirements. Upon successful completion of course, each student is issued a picture ID with a unique barcode. The student information is then stored in an online database. This orientation has become the standard program for the industry and certifies a student at awareness level for important safety topics. There will be two dates offered for this course for your convenience. The first date will be Thursday, February 10, 2011 and the second one being Thursday, March 31, 2011. Time for the course is 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will be held at the Seneca Highlands Area Vo-Tech School.

Telecommunications Technologies Certification(11.5 CEUs)
The Potter County Education Council will offer a Telecommunications Technologies Certification Course at the PCEC at the Vo-Tech. Fiber optic cabling is being used across Pennsylvania and the United States in various capacities. Complete theses three courses and earn your industry-recognized C-Tech Telecommunications Technologies Certification along with a Penn State Continuing Education Certificate. Introduction to Telecommunications and Green Technology Systems: Learn the basics and history of data, voice, and video in this overview of telecommunications. Introduction to Network Cabling: Copper-Based Systems: Construct, test, and troubleshoot copper-based cabling systems that are the basis of today’s networking, cable television, and satellite communications systems. Introduction to Network Cabling: Fiber Optic Based Systems: Become familiar with and learn the basics of light, light transmission, and light reception using ultra-pure glass fibers. Learn the basics of cable termination, testing, and troubleshooting to prepare for a career in either the commercial or residential environment. Who Should Attend: Persons wanting certification in one of the fastest growing high-demand occupations in the country (Class size limited to 10). Benefits: Earn an industry-recognized certificate upon completion of all three courses; Learn basics of network cabling in both copper-based systems and fiber-optic based systems; Receive hands-on training; Upon completion, receive a field tool kit. Electrical Safety for Maintenance Personnel
The Potter County Education Council will hold an Electrical Safety for Maintenance Personnel Course at the PCEC at the Vo-Tech. This course is designed to raise the safety awareness of electrical maintenance personnel on all levels by examining electrical hazards and the proper methods used to avoid them. Key topics include: Understanding OSHA, NFPA and their functions in the workplace, Electrical Hazards, Arc Flash, Lockout/Tagout, PPE, Grounding, overcurrent protection, testing and measuring devices, practical and safe troubleshooting methods, and guidelines for safe equipment installation. The course is March 15 & 17, 2011 from 4:30 – 8:30 p.m. The cost for the course is $200 per person and will be held at the Seneca Highlands Vo-Tech School in Port Allegany.
Pharmacy Technician Program
The Potter County Education Council will hold a Pharmacy Technician Program at the PCEC at the Vo-Tech. This comprehensive 50 hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings – working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. Course Hours - 50 hrs. This course begins March 15, 2011 and continues on Tuesdays and Thursday from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. until May 3, 2011. The cost for the course is $999 per person and includes text books. Home Spa Essentials (12 hours)
The Potter County Education Council will hold a Home Spa Essentials Course at the PCEC at the Vo-Tech. Let’s face it, everyone is trying to save a few bucks during this economic downturn, but that doesn’t mean that you have to give up your personal pampering. Everyone deserves the occasional day of rest and relaxation to recharge from life’s many stresses. During this program, you will learn basic spa treatments that you can give yourself at home to reduce stress, improve your appearance, and reinvigorate yourself. During each session, you will learn about and give yourself treatments. Potential topics include: basic manicures and pedicures, facials, scalp treatments, and many more. This course begins on March 15, 2011 and continues Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. and continues until March 24, 2011. How to Use Your Digital Camera
The Potter County Education Council will hold a digital camera class at the Coudersport Office.
Bring along your camera and learn to use the sometimes confusing menu system to really make your photos sing. Clear the air of nonsense nomenclature in plain language. Curt Weinhold will teach you how to download to the computer and sort into files for retrieval. FREE software to enhance the photos and a bit of exposure, composition and lighting. Curt is a Pa Wilds juried artisan. The class will be held Thursday, February 3 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. The cost for the course is $29 per person. Intermediate Sign Language
The Potter County Education Council will hold a Intermediate Sign Language Course at the Coudersport Office. This workshop continues where the basic course leaves off. Sharpen your skills for use in a professional, as well, a personal context. Anyone who already has a basic knowledge of sign language is welcome. The course will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning April 12th and ending May19th. Times for the course are 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. and will cost $125 per person. Beekeeping For Beginners – Virtual Webinar Series
Penn State Cooperative Extension is conducting a virtual Beginner Beekeeping Class starting in February 2011. The webinar course is designed to create a foundation of beekeeping knowledge in order to confidently help beginners manage honeybees.
Webinars are web-based seminars which delivers training through the Internet directly to your computer. You are able to view the presentation via your home/office computer and listen to the audio portion of the presentation through your computer’s speakers. These are interactive and will allow the participants to ask questions and communicate with the presenters. If you can’t join the session or would like to review a certain topic, sessions will be recorded and available to participants until the end of the year. The course includes 7 live webinar sessions (recorded and available through December 31, 2011, Virtual Beekeeping Field Day and access to the instructors.
